IRRI’s digital monitoring and reporting system nominated for the Vietnam National Television’s Awards for Impressive Digital Transformation Application of the Year

The Rice Activity Monitoring and Reporting System (RiceMoRe) developed by IRRI and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development recognized for impactful contribution to agricultural management.

IRRI is proud to announce that the Rice Activity Monitoring and Reporting system 'RiceMoRe', including its innovative FarMoRe app component, has been nominated for the prestigious Vietnam National Television's Awards 2024. The nomination of RiceMoRe in the category of Impressive Digital Transformation Application of the Year is a significant achievement and testament to its contribution to modernizing agricultural management in Viet Nam and its impact on the rice sector.

What is RiceMoRe?

RiceMoRe is a powerful digital system that supports the Viet Nam Government in advancing strategic management, monitoring, and reporting of rice production. Operating on both web and mobile platforms, RiceMoRe automates and standardizes the weekly collection and reporting of rice production activity data across all administrative levels. The system automatically generates and summarises geo-referenced data, providing near real-time insights into rice production - significantly improving management, monitoring, and reporting efficiency at scale.

The innovative FarMoRe component

FarMoRe offers a solution to record field-level activities like a farming diary, and automatically estimate greenhouse gas emissions based on farmers' input. The output of the FarMoRe component can be used as evidence to facilitate communication between extensionists and rice farmers. This holds the potential to provide invaluable insights for developing rice farming advisories. It can also be used as a digital tool to support Measurement, Reporting and Verification (MRV) of low-emission rice production.

Impact and recognition by the Ministry

RiceMoRe was developed in close collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) with financial support from the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) through the New Zealand Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) and New Zealand Agricultural Greenhouse Gas Research Center (NZAGRC), CGIAR's initiatives on Securing the Food Systems of Asian Mega-Deltas for Climate and Livelihood Resilience, Low-Emission Food Systems, and the Agroecological Transition Program for Building Resilient and Inclusive Agricultural Food Systems.

The system addresses critical challenges in monitoring crop production, and the related climate impacts at national scale. Since its transfer to MARD, RiceMoRe has been instrumental in improving efficiency in data reporting and statistics, reducing administrative time and costs, and enabling faster response to agricultural emergencies. RiceMoRe is considered a foundation for developing a digital data ecosystem for rice production specifically, with plans for expansion across all crops. This VTV Awards nomination underscores the Ministry's recognition of RiceMoRe's vital role in driving digital transformation within the agricultural sector and its commitment to innovative approaches to sustainable agriculture.

"RiceMoRe offers an integrated solution for collecting, reporting, and processing rice activity data, helping agricultural officials oversee and assess the adoption of cultivation technologies. This provides important insights for developing relevant and adoptable technical advice for farmers." - Mr. Le Thanh Tung, Former Deputy Director of the Department of Crop Production, MARD

The VTV Awards are highly competitive awards presented annually by Viet Nam National Television. The nomination process involves rigorous evaluation by a panel of experts and public voting.

"We are incredibly grateful to MARD and our local partners for their partnership and support," said Dr. Bui Tan Yen, climate change scientist at IRRI Vietnam. "While we did not win the award this year, this nomination is a significant achievement, validating our efforts to support the government and highlighting the importance of investing in digital solutions for the evolving needs of the agricultural sector. We remain committed to further developing and improving our innovations to better serve sustainable rice production in Vietnam and other countries and to contribute to the broader agricultural community."

This is a New Zealand Government-funded partnership with IRRI in support of the objectives of the Global Research Alliance on Agricultural Greenhouse Gases. This activity is also part of the CGIAR Initiatives on Asian Mega-Deltas and Low Emission Food Systems, and the Agroecological Transitions for Building Resilient and Inclusive Agriculture and Food Systems Program funded by IFAD and EU.
