Governor and Lt. Governor Welcome High-Level Delegation from Japan

Special Advisor to Prime Minister Leads Group for Meeting at Adelup to Strengthen Japan-Guam Economic Relationship

Hagåtña, Guam - Governor Lou Leon Guerrero and Lt. Governor Joshua Tenorio met with a high-ranking delegation visiting Guam on behalf of the Japanese Government.

The delegates were led by Mr. Sadamasa Oue, Special Advisor to the Prime Minister of Japan.

"Our territorial status notwithstanding, Guam enjoys a bilateral relationship with Japan that is unique among all the states and territories of the United States," said Governor Leon Guerrero, adding, "It was our honor to welcome to Guam Mr. Sadamasa Oue, Special Advisor to the Prime Minister of Japan."

Building on the foundation of over 100 Japanese businesses located in Guam, Lt. Governor Tenorio proposed establishing direct channels between Japanese trade officials and Guam's leadership to accelerate shared economic goals.

"There appears to be a clear willingness on the part of the Japanese government to strengthen existing ties and establish new areas of cooperation," the Lt. Governor stated after the meeting. "I believe the door has been opened for new, 21st-century opportunities between Japan and Guam," he added.

Special Advisor Oue was accompanied by representatives of the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Defense, the Consul-General to Guam, Mr. Susumu Ueda, and Vice Consul Ms. Yumi Sasada.

After meeting with the Governor and Lt. Governor, the delegation from Japan met with military officials and toured Japanese government-funded projects here. Governor Leon Guerrero underscored that the people of Guam can look forward to the many benefits that accrue to the island from continued cooperation with Japan.
