REPORT: Husted's budget plan would force deep cuts to Social Security and Medicare

STEUBENVILLE, OHIO - This week, Ohioans in Steubenville called out Jon Husted for his record of cutting seniors' health care, pushing massive cuts to Social Security and Medicare, and protecting the abusive nursing home industry.

Jon Husted championed legislation that would force massive cuts to Social Security and Medicare, and cast the tie-breaking vote for the largest cut to Medicaid in history. Husted has also protected the abusive nursing home industry after taking more than a million dollars from industry executives and lobbyists.

"Thanks to the votes Jon Husted has made, nursing homes that rely on Medicaid money will have to shut down their business. And then what happens to their employees? I don't want to see our seniors suffer by losing Medicaid," said former state Representative Eileen Krupinski. "They're not going to stop with eliminating Medicaid. They're going to turn their attention to Social Security and Medicare, and I'm sorry to say that Jon Husted already has."

"As we look around the United States today, seniors can't afford gas, the utilities, or anything that takes away from their right to be able to maintain a standard of living. They don't need cuts. They need help. They need help immediately," said John Saunders, Ohio senior and United Steelworkers District 1 staff representative. "This town, this valley, has a lot of older people who worked in the mills, worked in aluminum, and worked in the coal mines. They're depending on those benefits. Jon Husted continues to side with the other side. We're here fighting on their behalf to preserve those benefits."

"Jon Husted - he's just after some obligations to gain more financially for himself. He's against Medicare and Medicaid and wants to cut those programs. He doesn't give a damn about senior citizens, and believe me, I do. I'm one of them, and it's upsetting," said Mel Woods, Ohio senior and financial secretary of United Mineworkers of America, District 31.

Jon Husted can't be trusted to fight for Ohio seniors:

• Jon Husted protected nursing homes facing lawsuits for wrongful death and elder abuse, pushing through an industry-backed bill when he served in the state legislature.

• Husted has taken more than $1 million from nursing home executives and lobbyists throughout his career, including more than $34,000 for his Senate campaign.

• Husted's campaign took more than $60,000 from the Ohio Health Care Association PAC, executives, and lobbyists, while the organization lobbied on behalf of at least five nursing home facilities that left elderly patients at homeless shelters.

• Husted championed legislation that would force massive cuts to Social Security and Medicare, which millions of Ohio seniors rely on.

• Husted cast the deciding vote for the largest cut to Medicaid in history, ripping coverage from 490,000 Ohioans and putting at least eleven rural Ohio hospitals on the brink of closure.
