City of Tulsa to Dedicate Honorary Street Sign in Memory of Longtime City Employee Dwain E. Midget

The City of Tulsa will honor the life and legacy of longtime public servant Dwain E. Midget with the unveiling of an honorary street sign at the intersection of East Pine Street and North Peoria Avenue, on Friday, August 7.

The honorary designation recognizes Midget's decades of dedicated service to the City of Tulsa and the lasting impact he made on neighborhoods and communities across the city, particularly in North Tulsa. Throughout a career that spanned more than three decades and eight mayoral administrations, Midget became widely respected for his commitment to public service, collaborative leadership and unwavering belief in improving the lives of Tulsa residents.

Midget passed away in 2022, but his legacy continues to this day through his dedicated work throughout Tulsa.

"Dwain Midget dedicated his life to serving Tulsa and strengthening the neighborhoods and communities that make our city what it is today," Mayor Nichols said. "Naming a street in his honor is a fitting tribute to someone whose passion, leadership, and commitment left a lasting mark. I'm confident that Dwain's legacy will continue to inspire future generations of Tulsans and leaders across this city."

Midget began his career with the City after working summer jobs as a refuse collector in the early 1970s before joining the organization full-time in 1984. Over the course of his career, he served in several departments, including City Development, Human Rights, Planning and Working In Neighborhoods, ultimately becoming Director of the Working In Neighborhoods Department in 2008. He also served as Director of Community Development and Educational Initiatives for the City.

"Our family is honored that the City of Tulsa is recognizing my father's contributions. He believed Tulsa deserved to thrive. His vision for a revitalized north Tulsa led to the development of the North Peoria Corridor- beginning at Pine Street - and helped lay the foundation for today's growth," said Jemia Midget, Dwain's daughter. "As I see North Peoria continue to transform, I am in awe of his vision and perseverance. The designation of Dwain 'Flip' Midget Avenue at Pine and Peoria is a powerful tribute. We hope his story continues to inspire investment in and commitment to north Tulsa for generations to come."

Known for his humility, compassion and ability to bring people together, Midget devoted his career to strengthening Tulsa neighborhoods and creating opportunities for residents. His leadership and mentorship influenced generations of public servants and earned the respect of colleagues, community leaders and elected officials across administrations.

The honorary "Dwain 'Flip' Midget Ave." street sign will serve as a permanent tribute to his decades of service and his lasting contributions to the City of Tulsa.
