As part of the 2024 One Book, One Community reading project, the Fargo Public Library will host a free screening of the documentary "Dakota 38" on Sunday, Sept. 22, starting at 2 p.m. at the downtown Main Library.

The film is a 78-minute documentary that follows horseback riders on a 330-mile route from Lower Brule, South Dakota, to Mankato, Minnesota, to arrive at the site of the hanging of 38 Dakota men at the end of the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862. The horseback journey was inspired by a dream of Jim Miller, a Native American spiritual leader and Vietnam veteran. The film was released in 2012 by Smooth Feather Productions. A brief discussion will follow the film led by Manaja Hill, brother/cousin of Jim Miller. Hill is a veteran of the 101st Airborne Division and an enrolled member the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe. No registration is required. The event is open to all ages. Free popcorn will be served. For more details, contact Lori West at 701.476.5977.
