RWJUH Somerset Partners With Downtown Somerville Businesses to Encourage Women to Get Screening Mammograms

Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital (RWJUH) Somerset, an RWJBarnabas Health hospital, is partnering with three Downtown Somerville businesses to encourage women to get their annual mammograms this summer.

Women who schedule their mammogram through Aug. 15 at the hospital's Sanofi US Breast Care Program will receive special discount offers from the following businesses:

  • Ambee Coffee, 37 West Main Street

  • Blue Sheep Bake Shop, 84 West Main Street

  • Verve, 18 East Main Street

The initiative kicks off today at the Downtown Somerville Alliance's Girls' Night Out. Representatives from the Sanofi US Breast Care Program will be providing more information about the importance of mammograms and assist in scheduling appointments.

"Women are often so busy taking care of others that we don't take care of ourselves," said Deirdre Blaus, Chief Administrative Officer, RWJUH Somerset. "Make a date to take care of your health - and invite your mother, sister or best friend to join you. Get your mammogram and then head down the street to Downtown Somerville for lunch or dinner, coffee or dessert."

"We're so grateful to Ambee Coffee, Blue Sheep Bake Shop and Verve for partnering with us to raise awareness of the importance of annual mammograms to detect breast cancer at its earliest stages," said Kerstin Scheper, DNP, RN, OCN, GERO-BC, NE-BC ,Assistant Vice President, Oncology Services, RWJUH Somerset. "All women over 40 should get a mammogram each year. Talk to your doctor about getting screened at an earlier age if you have a family history of breast cancer."

Together with Rutgers Cancer Institute, the state's only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, RWJUH Somerset provides Central New Jersey women access to world-class cancer care including clinical trials, immunotherapy, and precision medicine, close to home.

Located in the hospital's Steeplechase Cancer Center, the Sanofi US Breast Care Program offers the latest technologies, including 3D mammography, breast ultrasounds, MRI, PET/CT and core breast biopsies. A multidisciplinary breast care team, including breast radiologists; pathologists; medical, surgical and radiation oncologists; plastic surgeons; certified oncology nurses; and other breast specialists review cancer diagnoses and develop a plan of care.

A breast cancer patient navigator helps guide patients through their treatment options available at the Steeplechase Cancer Center, including chemotherapy, immunotherapy, hormone therapy, radiation oncology, minimally-invasive surgery, plastic and reconstructive breast surgery and lymphedema treatment. The Sanofi US Wellness Boutique, located in the cancer center lobby, features certified wig, prosthetic and lymphedema garment fitters. In addition, the cancer center offers a full range of support and survivorship programs.

No prescription is needed for a screening mammogram. Appointments at the Sanofi US Breast Care Program can be scheduled online through the MyChart patient portal at www.rwjbh.org/mychart or by calling 908-704-3740. Evening and Saturday appointments are available.
