The City of Fairfield recognized the Fairfield Lions Club during the June 16, 2026, City Council meeting for its leadership and generous support of the Downtown Arch restoration project, a signature community initiative supporting Fairfield's America 250 celebration.
Originally constructed in 1925 by the Fairfield Host Lions Club, the Downtown Arch has welcomed generations of residents and visitors into the heart of Fairfield. Nearly a century later, the Lions Club once again stepped forward to lead efforts to preserve and restore one of the city's most recognizable landmarks.
Working in partnership with the City of Fairfield, local businesses, community organizations, and residents, the Fairfield Host Lions Club successfully raised $100,000 to support restoration of the iconic structure.
The restoration project includes refreshed paint, restored lighting, and commemorative plaques recognizing Fairfield's history, downtown identity, and designation as an America 250 Pledge City. The project serves as a lasting tribute to the community spirit, civic pride, and volunteerism that have shaped Fairfield for generations.
"The Fairfield Host Lions Club has been woven into the fabric of this community for more than a century," said Councilmember Scott Tonnesen. "From organizing community events like Easter egg hunts and supporting local youth to restoring the Fairfield Arch, their dedication to service and civic pride is unmatched. Their contributions demonstrate what can be accomplished when neighbors come together to invest in their community."
During the meeting, Fairfield Host Lions Club representative Nancy Meadows presented a ceremonial check recognizing the successful completion of the club's fundraising campaign.
"When the Lions Club first raised $1,000 to install the Fairfield Arch in 1925, they planted a seed of community pride that continues to grow today," said Meadows. "We are proud to help restore this important community landmark and preserve its legacy for future generations. This achievement would not have been possible without the incredible generosity of our corporate partners and community supporters. Any funds raised beyond our goal will continue supporting local youth and senior programs."
Premier sponsors recognized on the commemorative donor plaque include Ferrara Jelly Belly, Visit Fairfield, Joe and Sonny Basra - ARCO AM/PM, Medic Ambulance, Herman G. Rowland Sr., the Hayer Family and Bevbox, and the Hindu Sikh Community.
The restored Downtown Arch will be formally celebrated during Fairfield's Fourth of July festivities as part of the city's America 250 observance. The event will serve as a cornerstone of Fairfield's local commemoration of the nation's 250th anniversary and highlight the community partnerships that continue to strengthen Fairfield today.
