Tallian Calls on Congress to Fight Trump Tariffs

April 3, 2025

INDIANAPOLIS - Indiana State Democratic Party Chair Karen Tallian issued the following statement on President Donald Trump's blanket tariffs. They are already having an impact in Indiana after 900 layoffs announced by Stellantis today, including many of which at their Kokomo plant.

"President Trump imposed the largest tax increase in history on all Americans through an executive order," said Tallian.

"The President calls his actions "tariffs" on other countries, but every respectable economist knows blanket tariffs are taxes, and the burden of the Trump tariffs will fall on hardworking Americans," said Tallian. "Tariffs will be devastating on Hoosier agriculture and manufacturing, with hundreds of thousands of jobs at risk in Indiana alone. Costs will only increase on automobiles, and at the grocery store and the gas pump."

"I wish Indiana U.S. Senators Todd Young and Jim Banks would use their positions in the Republican majority Senate to support legislation to pause these tariffs and bring some common sense into this issue," said Tallian. "However, their vote to continue blanket tariffs on Canada shows they are currently not holding this administration accountable. They should support the bipartisan bill by Sens. Chuck Grassley and Maria Cantwell to require Congressional approval for tariffs within 60 days. Democrats stand ready to work with the Republican majorities to reassert Congressional authority over these taxes,"

"The job of both Republicans and Democrats in Congress is to protect Hoosiers, not Donald Trump. Congressional Republicans hold the majorities and they hold the cards. It's time for the Republicans to step up, and Democrats are ready to help you stop this and protect Hoosier jobs and pocketbooks," said Tallian.
