Georgia DOT Commissioner McMurry Named to
Atlanta Magazine's 2026 'Atlanta 500'

ATLANTA, GA - Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) Commissioner Russell R. McMurry, P.E., has been recognized by Atlanta Magazine as one of Atlanta's 500 most powerful leaders in the transportation category. The annual 'Atlanta 500' highlights influential figures in the city across diverse industries, showcasing those making significant impacts in their respective fields.

"It is a tremendous honor to be included in this distinguished list of leaders who are helping shape the future of Atlanta," said McMurry. "This recognition is truly humbling and serves as a reflection of the more than 4,000 Georgia DOT employees whose valuable contributions help deliver a transportation network designed to support the state's growing economy while prioritizing the safety and mobility of Georgia's citizens."

McMurry began his career at Georgia DOT in 1990 as an engineering intern. He has served in a variety of leadership roles within the department and rose to his current position when the Georgia State Transportation Board appointed him commissioner by unanimous vote in 2015. As commissioner, McMurry manages a staff of over 4,000 civil servants with an annual budget of $5.57 billion in fiscal year 2025. In 2025, he was elected president of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), a nonprofit, nonpartisan association representing highway and transportation departments in the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico.

Commissioner McMurry has received many accolades throughout his career. Along with being a consistent figure in the 'Atlanta 500', he was included in James Magazine's 2024 list of most influential Georgians. Additionally, he was named Georgia Trend's 2018 Georgian of the Year and regularly appears in the publication's 100 Most Influential Georgians list. In 2025, he was honored with the ITS America Lifetime Achievement Award and inducted into the ITS World Congress Hall of Fame.

Georgia Department of Transportation plans, constructs and maintains Georgia's state and federal highways.
