International Desk’s New Managing Editor

The flood of news is without precedent. Over the past three years, Adrienne Carter has led our London newsroom through three wars - in Ukraine, Gaza and now Iran - while building it into an ever more vital cornerstone of everything The New York Times does.

Today, we are thrilled to recognize her leadership by announcing she is becoming an international managing editor. In taking on this broader role, she'll join us in driving coverage around the world and pushing the transformation of our journalism in every bureau and hub.

In Adrienne's time so far in London, her team has set the agenda again and again, delivering urgent, unflinching reporting and holding power to account on some of the biggest and most challenging stories of our time. Our coverage of the Ukraine and Gaza wars has been recognized with the top awards in journalism. But coverage of the wars is only part of what Adrienne has managed. From the fall of Assad in Syria to the fraying of the transatlantic alliance to a devastating earthquake in Turkey and an attempted coup in Russia - all against an ever-shifting geopolitical backdrop driven by President Trump - she has led our journalists through the storm with steadiness and clarity of purpose.

At the same time, she has strengthened the foundation that makes it all possible. The London newsroom, under Adrienne's leadership, has become an indispensable pillar of our 24/7, multiplatform operation. She helped oversee our move to a new London home - an office that reflects our growing international ambitions - and has cemented the operation's role not just as an editing hub but also as a center for innovation. She has been a trusted partner in our expanding visual ambitions, working closely with graphics, photo and video to push the boundaries of story format. She has deepened our investment in Live, finding new opportunities to serve more readers with breaking news coverage and refining how we tell ongoing stories as they unfold. Through it all, she has kept the team safe and held it together with calm, care and resolve.

None of this will surprise anyone who has worked with Adrienne. An exceptional editor, thoughtful leader and top-notch journalist, she arrived at The Times in 2010, rose through business journalism, and won the Nathaniel Nash Award in 2019 - the first editor in the history of a prize named after a correspondent who died on assignment for The Times. As Asia editor, she moved a newsroom across a continent during a pandemic, driving distinctive coverage of the outbreak in China as well as of Xi Jinping's authoritarian ambitions, the assassination of Shinzo Abe and a coup in Myanmar.

In the years we have worked with Adrienne, one thing is always clear. She is the person you want at your side. In a breaking news crisis, in a difficult discussion, in a moment when the path forward isn't obvious - Adrienne is whom we call. We'll be calling even more often now, and we could not be more excited.
