If you own Alphabet (GOOGL) or Meta Platforms (META), you own the same idea : AI makes an advertising machine earn more, and both companies are spending heavily on computing capacity. The fork is where the money comes back from. Alphabet already has outside customers under contract through Google Cloud. Alphabet already sells directly to enterprise customers under contract through Google Cloud, whereas Meta is in the earlier stages of commercializing enterprise access to its AI models.
Which Company Already Has Customers For Its Capacity?
Alphabet does. Its Cloud backlog reached $514 billion in the second quarter of 2026, and management expects just over half of it to become revenue within 24 months. Cloud revenue rose 82% in that quarter, and management says growth sped up even without its first TPU system sales.
Alphabet raised its 2026 capital spending plan to $195 billion to $205 billion, against about $446 billion of trailing revenue, and expects spending to rise significantly again in 2027. This infrastructure expansion has required significant balance-sheet leverage. Its debt went from about $16 billion to about $100 billion in a year, and management expects free cash flow to remain under pressure. It still holds $242.5 billion of cash and marketable securities.
Meta's outlook is a different kind of statement. Against about $228 billion of trailing revenue, it narrowed its 2026 outlay to $130 billion to $145 billion-though unlike Alphabet's pure cash capex guidance, Meta's figure incorporates finance-lease payments. It has offers for its compute at a premium, yet its CEO says selling it all for a quick profit would be foolish.
What Does Meta Earn Back From Its Own Apps?
So far, a faster-growing ad business. Meta says its AI ranking models lifted ad clicks on Facebook by 8.3% and conversions by 15.7%. Its Advantage+ campaign tools reached an annual revenue run rate above $75 billion in the second quarter of 2026.
Meta's revenue grew 28% over the last twelve months against 20% at Alphabet. Its operating margin is 38% against Alphabet's 33%.
Meta carries its own open risk. Its CFO warned that youth-related trials in the U.S. may ultimately result in a material loss. By contrast, Alphabet's primary appeal on paper is a cheaper multiple.
Does Alphabet's Lower Multiple Settle It?
No, because the discount leans on gains outside the business. Alphabet trades at 13.5 times EBIT against Meta's 16.4, but Alphabet's EBIT includes paper investment gains that nearly double its operating income. Measured purely on core operating earnings, Alphabet flips from a bargain to the pricier stock at roughly 27 times. Management attributed the jump in second-quarter 2026 net income mainly to unrealized gains on its equity securities. Those same gains are behind Alphabet's lead on net margin, 54.8% against Meta's 29.8%.
With Alphabet's valuation and margin advantages driven largely by non-operating equity gains, the two businesses sit at an operational standoff: Alphabet offers contractual enterprise revenue against mounting debt, while Meta offers wider core margins burdened by legal overhang. Alphabet brings contracted Cloud customers and $242.5 billion of cash and marketable securities against about $100 billion of debt, though its 2027 spending is set to rise again. Meta brings faster growth and a wider operating margin from its own ads, while Meta offers wider core operating margins alongside undefined 2027 capex commitments and ongoing youth-litigation scrutiny. Our five-factor scorecard rates both on growth, profitability, stability, resilience and valuation.
Whichever Stock Wins The Comparison, Concentration Still Loses
A comparison sharpens the pick, but owning too much of either name is the same concentrated bet. Concentration tends to arrive by accident rather than by decision.
