Boise residents can now scrape more leftovers off their plates and into one of the city's most popular waste reduction programs. The city has added meat, dairy, and grain products to the list of items residents can put in their compost carts.
Over 97% of eligible Boise homes use compost carts, keeping over 30,000 tons of organic waste - the equivalent of a fully loaded cargo ship - out of the landfill each year. Despite this impressive participation, a city survey revealed that nearly half use their compost carts for yard waste, not food waste. Food waste in the landfill produces methane, a potent greenhouse gas. When composted instead, what Boiseans clean from their plates and refrigerators can enrich soils in city parks, yards, and gardens. This helps support healthier green spaces, cleaner air, and more comfortable temperatures during summer heat.
"It's better for our quality of life and it saves literal tons of space in our landfill," says Lisa Knapp, Boise's compost program coordinator. "So we want to collect all of those kitchen scraps, and we want to make it as easy as possible to do at home."
