Laurie Trautman, director of WWU's Border Policy Research Institute, has been invited to take part in the 16th annual Festival Della Diplomazia in Rome, a 10-day event in October that brings together government, think tanks, and academia from across the world to engage in discussions about global challenges and diplomacy.

Trautman's travel is supported by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the European Parliament. In Rome, Trautman will participate in panel discussions at the Canadian Embassy as well as a local university, focused on trade relations and cross-border mobility.

Rome's large international community and its position as a hub for diplomatic relations (home to 140 embassies as well as the Vatican), is a fitting location for the theme of this years' festival, which focuses on how longstanding principles and values that have guided international relations - such as human rights, democracy and solidarity - are increasingly under pressure.
