Icelandic voters reject accession negotiations with the European Union

In a referendum, held on 29 August 2026, the people of Iceland voted against resuming accession negotiations with the European Union.

Turnout in the referendum was high, 82,6% of registered voters participated, 225.031 out of the 272.591 people on the voter register.

  • 52,8% voted NO while
  • 47,2% voted yes.

The referendum was held on the basis of the platform of the current Government, from 21 December 2024, to seek the guidance of the people on a question that has for many years been debated in Iceland. The result of the referendum means that the Government will not enter into negotiations with the EU about possible accession of Iceland to the Union.
