Washington, DC - Tonight, as costs for American families continue to soar and environmental and public health protections are weakened by his administration, Donald Trump delivered the first official State of the Union address of his second term.
In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Loren Blackford released the following statement:
"For a majority of American families, the state of our union is overwhelmed. The reality that Donald Trump has manufactured in his mind is radically different from the reality faced by families across our country. His failed policies continue to upend peoples' lives and livelihoods, and his reckless approach to energy and our environment come at a high cost to the American people, from propping up dying and expensive coal plants on the taxpayers' dime to defunding and disinvesting in affordable clean energy that lowers monthly bills and brings hundreds of thousands of local jobs with it. He's weakening drinking water standards and safeguards that protect us from things like mercury poisoning, withdrawing us from long-held climate agreements, and even directing his EPA to set the value of a human life to zero when conducting cost-benefit analyses. The bottom line is that Donald Trump has his thumb on the scale, picking winners and losers in this country, and unless you're a corporate polluter or billionaire fossil fuel executive, you don't stand a chance to win. The Sierra Club will continue to stand up to this administration in every way we can, in the streets, in big cities and small communities alike, and in the courts."
