Portland, Ore. (Jan. 6) - After helping his team stretch its winning streak with a pair of crucial road victories, UAA senior Sean Evans was named Monday as the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Player of the Week for men's basketball.
A 6'3'' guard, Evans averaged 22.0 points on 58 percent shooting, 3.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists as UAA earned wins over Simon Fraser and Western Washington.
On Thursday, the Nebraska-Kearney transfer scored a career-high 32 points on 10-of-17 shooting (6-13 3FG, 8-9 FT) to power a 94-87 victory over the Red Leafs in Canada. He also had just one turnover in a team-high 36 minutes as UAA scored a season high against D-II competition.
On Saturday, Evans overcame early foul trouble to help UAA recover from a 58-51 deficit with six minutes remaining in a 71-67 win over the Vikings in Bellingham. The Parker, Colo., product finished with 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting (2-4 3FG) and three rebounds.
"Sean was outstanding for us last weekend," said UAA head coach Rusty Osborne. "Thursday he carried us offensively, scoring at all three levels, and was clutch down the stretch at the free-throw line. Saturday he fought through foul trouble and made some big shots and plays in the last five minutes to spark our win. He continues to get better and more comfortable in our system each week."
It is the first GNAC Player of the Week honor for Evans and the second for a Seawolf this season, along with Bishop Tosi's award for Dec. 2-8.
Winners of five in a row, the Seawolves (10-7, 3-1 GNAC) return to the Alaska Airlines Center this week for games against Northwest Nazarene (Thur., 7 p.m.) and Central Washington (Sat., 7 p.m.). Tickets and live links are available at GoSeawolves.com.
