Cary Water Main Break Prompts System Pressure Advisory, Closes Portion of N.C. 55

  • Water customers in Cary and Morrisville within its Central Pressure Zone are experiencing periods of low pressure following a 30-inch water main break in the early hours of September 14.

  • N.C. 55 is closed in both directions between the Jenks Road/Old Jenks Road intersection and the Lewey Drive/Turner Creek Road intersection. Traffic is expected to be restored to one lane in each direction by 7 a.m., conditions permitting.

  • In accordance with guidance from the N.C. Division of Water Resources, affected customers are advised to boil water used for human consumption for one minute or use bottled water while the System Pressure Advisory is in effect

CARY, NC - Water customers in Cary and Morrisville within its Central Pressure Zone are under a System Pressure Advisory following a 30-inch water main break in the early hours of September 14 that is causing periods of low pressure. The System Pressure Advisory is precautionary and is being issued because of low water pressure.

Low water pressure can create conditions that may allow bacteria to enter the water system. No harmful bacteria have been detected in the water system. In accordance with guidance from the N.C. Division of Water Resources, affected customers are advised to boil water used for human consumption for one minute or use bottled water while the System Pressure Advisory is in effect. This precautionary guidance is consistent with the state's guidance for a System Pressure Advisory.

Customers in the affected area are strongly encouraged to conserve water whenever possible while crews respond to the break. Customers in the Western Pressure and Southern Pressure Zones are experiencing normal conditions, and Apex and RDU Airport are not impacted by the water main break.

Water samples will be collected beginning at 5 a.m. as part of the Town's ongoing monitoring of the water system. The earliest test results are expected around midnight. The Town will provide updates as information becomes available.

N.C. 55 is closed in both directions between the Jenks Road/Old Jenks Road intersection and the Lewey Drive/Turner Creek Road intersection while crews clear debris from the roadway. Traffic is expected to be restored to one lane in each direction by 7 a.m., conditions permitting. Drivers should use alternate routes.

The System Pressure Advisory will remain in effect until further notice, through at least 12:01 a.m. on Tuesday, September 15. The Town will provide another update by noon today and will continue to share information as conditions change.
