The Chinese tallow tree, although tall and beautiful, is an invasive species that rapidly spreads across landscapes. These trees grow quickly, crowd out native species, and can take over prairies and open land in just a few years. The City has already removed around 12 acres of Chinese tallow as part of an ongoing prairie restoration effort at the Dr. Ned and Fay Dudney Clear Creek Nature Center. This multi-year project is focused on protecting and restoring native habitats, which are critical for maintaining the balance of our local environment.
What You Can Do
If you own property in League City-especially over an acre-look for trees with heart-shaped leaves with bright green tops and pale undersides. Cutting the tree down is the first step, but removing the root system is key to preventing regrowth. Always hire a professional if removal isn't safe, especially if the tree is near your home or near power lines.
