Sri Lanka and Saudi Arabia Forge Stronger Naval Ties to Combat Maritime Crime

The Deputy Minister of Defence, Major General Aruna Jayasekara (Retd.) held high level discussions with Vice Admiral Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Ghribi, Commander of the Royal Saudi Naval Forces (RSNF), focusing on a comprehensive enhancement of maritime security cooperation. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the World Defence Show (WDS) 2026 at the Defense Ministry in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

As an island nation, Sri Lanka faces significant transnational maritime threats, including drug and weapons trafficking, human smuggling, and organized crimes. Recognizing these shared challenges, both sides engaged in constructive dialogue to identify concrete areas of collaboration.

The Sri Lankan delegation sought Saudi assistance in enhancing Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA) through the introduction of advanced radar technologies capable of detecting small targets, as well as drone capabilities to bolster aerial surveillance. Upgrading surveillance systems onboard Sri Lanka Navy ships was also highlighted as a priority.

Both parties also explored the prospect of RSNF ships calling at Sri Lankan ports for goodwill visits and taking part in naval exercises and fleet reviews. The Commander of the RSNF expressed his willingness to initiate discussions in this regard.

Recognizing the evolving nature of modern threats, discussions included support to develop and strengthen cyber security capabilities within the Sri Lanka Navy to counter digital and hybrid challenges.

Both parties agreed on the importance of initiating formal Staff Level Talks and reciprocal training opportunities to strengthen institutional relations and identify follow up actions for future collaboration.

The meeting concluded on a positive note, with both sides reaffirming their commitment to working closely to address shared maritime security concerns and enhance bilateral naval cooperation.
