Oakland County Shares Additional Legionella Testing Results; Routine Testing Shows Non-Detect Results at Multiple Facilities

  • Routine testing shows non-detect results at the Medical Examiner's Office and East and West Wings of the courthouse complex.
  • Investigation sampling at the Oakland County Circuit Court Tower shows continued improvement, with detects reduced from three to one.
  • Preventive measures and expanded routine testing continue on the government campus, with jail testing beginning Tuesday, Jan. 27.

Pontiac, Mich. - Oakland County today provided an update on its Legionella testing efforts, including results from both investigation-related sampling and the county's recently launched routine testing program.

As part of the ongoing public health investigation at the Oakland County Circuit Court Tower, 23 samples were collected on Jan. 13 and 14, with results reported to the county on Jan. 23. One sample returned a detect for Legionella, down from three detects in the previous round of testing, reflecting continued progress as remediation efforts move forward under established state and federal guidelines.

Last week, the county also began a separate routine testing program, directed by its water consultant and conducted in accordance with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance. Routine testing is distinct from investigation-related testing and focuses on facilities not associated with the current Legionella investigations.

The first set of routine testing results, also reported on Jan. 23, showed all sampled locations returned "non-detect" results for the Legionella bacteria. Twelve samples were collected on Jan. 15 throughout the East and West Wings of the courthouse complex, and five samples were collected the same day at the Medical Examiner's Office. All samples returned non-detect results. Under routine testing protocols, non-detect sites are not scheduled for re-testing unless they test positive and remediation is prescribed.

Only facilities undergoing an active investigation - including the Court Tower and the Sheriff's Administration Building (38E) - are subject to scheduled re-testing of non-detect sites, consistent with CDC and state guidelines.

All county buildings continue to follow rigorous preventive measures, including routine flushing and water temperature monitoring and adjustment.

Routine testing at the Oakland County Jail is scheduled to begin Tuesday, Jan. 27. Additional results will be shared as they become available.
