READOUT: Ranking Member Shaheen’s Meeting with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun

NEW YORK CITY-Today, U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, met with Joseph Aoun, President of Lebanon on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly High Level Week.

Ranking Member Shaheen and President Aoun discussed the progress of the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) to assert full control over Lebanon's security since their last meeting in Beirut in August. The leaders agreed that American support to the LAF would be critical in attaining full security control of Lebanon, disarming Hezbollah and furthering regional stability. They discussed work in Congress to secure funding for the LAF and Lebanon's Internal Security Forces. She reiterated the United States' commitment to the Lebanese people's pursuit of peace, stability and economic opportunity.
