CANYON, Texas - Supporters of the arts at West Texas A&M University will enjoy four unique events this year while providing funding to improve student experiences.

Now in its 17th year, The Arts at WT: A Subscription Series offers exclusive access to the best that WT's Sybil B. Harrington College of Fine Arts and Humanities has to offer.

"We have a wonderful slate of entertaining events this year that represent most of the disciplines in the College," said Dr. Dan Peterson, dean. "The series continues to display the variety of amazing gifts of WT students and faculty. Please join us for the upcoming season and invite your friends to join as well. You won't be disappointed."

Membership is only $300 for two, which offers exclusive admission for two at four special events throughout the year. Individual memberships are available for $150.

Subscribers also may reserve tickets to WT Theatre productions and seats for the "Music of the Christmas Season" concert before the general public.

Subscribing to The Arts at WT helps ensure that mission continues by providing funds for four endowed scholarships, for special events and for purchases of essential equipment and supplies, Peterson said.

Arts subscribers receive admission for two to each of the season's special events:

  • "The Phantom of the Opera": (2:30 p.m. Oct. 18 reception and 3:30 p.m. performance in Mary Moody Northen Recital Hall): The WT Symphony Orchestra will provide live accompaniment to a screening of this 1925 classic horror film starring Lon Chaney, the Man of a Thousand Faces. The recently composed soundtrack incorporates arias from Charles Gounod's Faust.
  • "Swing & Sway: A Night of Big Band Dance" (6 p.m. Nov. 19 reception and 7 p.m. performance at Corona Event Venue, 5600 E. Amarillo Blvd.): WT Jazz and Dance join forces for an immersive performance tracing the living connection between music and movement. From the swing rhythms of Harlem to the fiery pulse of Latin America to the open horizons of contemporary jazz, the performance weaves together powerful live music with a full spectrum of dance styles in a production as visually stunning as it is joyful.
  • "Proclaim Liberty Throughout the Land: The American Founding in Word and Music" (6 p.m. March 4 reception and 7 p.m. program in WT Alumni Banquet Hall): This year, WT will host the Remnant Trust's collection of rare 14th-to-19th-century works that formed the foundation of the Declaration of Independence. To celebrate America's 250th birthday, join us for a multidisciplinary evening of words and music, with discussions of the documents, hands-on demonstrations of a printing press, a one-of-a-kind concert and remarks from Kristopher Bex, Remnant Trust director.
  • "Hello, Dolly!": (6 p.m. April 15 reception in the Hazel Kelley Wilson Grand Lobby and 7:30 p.m. performance in the Branding Iron Theatre): The University's spring musical-the beloved Broadway favorite about the inveterate matchmaker Dolly Levi-will feature a massive collaboration between performers from WT Theatre, WT Dance, WT Opera and the WT Symphony Orchestra, as well as classic backdrops painted by WT Art students.

Underwriters for The Arts at WT are Darlene and Dr. Bruce Brasington, Leisa and Allen Durrett, Lanna and Bob Hatton, Audrey and Lance Jones, Beth Lauterbach, Becky and Martin Lopez, Dorothy and Don Patterson, Sherry and David Schaeffer, and Lisa and Neil Veggeburg. Fostering an appreciation for the arts is a key mission of the University's long-range plan, WT 125: From the Panhandle to the World.

That plan is fueled by the One West comprehensive fundraising campaign, which raised more than $200 million dollars, the largest such campaign in Texas Panhandle history.
