Lifelong learners: WSU hosts DPSCD fine, performing arts educators for 3rd year with professional development workshops

For the third straight year, Wayne State University's College of Fine, Performing and Communication Arts will host the Detroit Public Schools Community District's (DPSCD) professional development day on Jan. 26 for all fine and performing arts educators in the district.

"We are excited to continue this relationship and welcome to Wayne State University's campus more than 200 K-12 teachers and administrators for a day full of workshops," said College of Fine, Performing and Communication Arts Interim Dean Kelly M. Young. "This is a key opportunity for the College to network with our community's K-12 arts educators who help shape the next generation of potential Creative Warriors."

Workshops will once again be led by faculty from the college's Maggie Allesee Department of Theatre and Dance; the James Pearson Duffy Department of Art, Art History, and Design; the Department of Music. In addition, CFPCA will partner with Art Education team in WSU's College of Education.

As in years past, DPSCD educators will choose (a la carte style) from a variety of workshops that include visual arts, theatre, dance, instrumental, vocal, general music and more.

"This event remains vital as we continue to strengthen the college's relationship with our community, while also building sustainable partnerships and pipelines," Young said. "This is one of those important steps toward achieving that goal. We are honored to host DPSCD."

For Andrew McGuire, DPSCD's deputy executive director of fine and performing arts, the partnership is a meaningful extension of support for their educators.

"By connecting with WSU and the College of Fine, Performing and Communication Arts, our teachers gain access to high-quality, relevant professional development that reflects the vibrant, creative energy of our local community," McGuire said. "It's more than just workshops - it's about being part of a shared mission to uplift education in Detroit."

And the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with DPSCD teachers telling him they feel seen, valued and appreciated.

"Many shared how impactful the sessions were, both in terms of content and the overall experience," McGuire said. "The catered lunch was a thoughtful touch that made them feel celebrated. Most importantly, they felt their hard work and dedication were acknowledged in a meaningful way."

He also can relate to their daily experiences, having previously been inside the classroom for six years as a music teacher with Chicago Public Schools. McGuire said he understands how transformative it is to step into a space that both challenges and nourishes someone, with the CFPCA workshops providing that environment.

"They offer our educators a chance to reflect, grow and connect with peers in a setting that honors their craft," McGuire said. "Being in an academic environment like WSU reminds our teachers that they are lifelong learners - and that their growth is a priority. It's not just about professional development; it's about professional affirmation."

"This partnership is a beautiful example of what's possible when we invest in our educators," he continued. "By honoring their work and creating enriching experiences like this, we're not only supporting teachers - we're uplifting the entire educational ecosystem. And that's something worth celebrating."
