ATLANTA - State Representative Eric Bell (D-Jonesboro) recently introduced House Bill 954, known as "Eric's Law," legislation that would provide additional support and recognition for Georgians living with physical or mental disabilities that are not immediately visible.
"Eric's Law is about awareness and safety," said Rep. Bell. "This legislation would allow Georgians with hidden disabilities, such as autism, intellectual or developmental disabilities or hearing impairments, to voluntarily add a butterfly symbol to their driver's license or ID to alert first responders and promote safer, more respectful interactions. Originating in Maryland and named after Eric Carpenter-Grantham, Eric's Law recognizes that many Georgians live with disabilities that aren't visible at first glance and gives them a simple, dignified way to communicate that reality. I look forward to working with my colleagues to advance this meaningful legislation, which has the potential to change many Georgians' lives."
HB 954 would allow individuals with physical or mental disabilities that are not immediately obvious or visible to request a symbol on the front of their driver's license indicating the presence of such a disability. To obtain the designation, an applicant would be required to submit a sworn statement to the Department of Driver Services describing the disability.
