Washington - The American Gas Association released the latest Energy Efficiency Programs Report today, unveiling data on natural gas utility energy efficiency programs and investments in 2023. The report showed that natural gas efficiency programs saved 371 million therms of energy in 2023, an increase of 34% compared to the previous year. American natural gas utilities that responded to the AGA survey spent approximately $1.42 billion on energy efficiency programs in 2023, averting emissions equivalent to removing 533,000 cars from the road.
"The success of these energy efficiency programs in saving energy means more money in the pockets of hard-working families," said AGA President and CEO Karen Harbert. "In a single year, these programs have increased energy savings by more than a third, helping to reduce bills for customers while enabling natural gas utilities to meet the needs of a growing customer base with less energy per customer than ever before."
The survey of U.S. based natural gas utilities assessed the status and metrics of ratepayer-funded natural gas efficiency and low-income weatherization programs for the 2023 program year. In preliminary estimates for the 2024 program year, respondents reported budgeting $1.53 billion for the program year, a year-over-year increase of more than $100 million.
