Breast Cancer Awareness Month honored by Brandon Hospital with community events and more

In recognition of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, HCA Florida Brandon Hospital is proud to highlight the importance of early detection, education and community support throughout October. The hospital is hosting and participating in several initiatives to raise awareness, celebrate survivors and encourage preventive screening.

Kicking off October with community partnerships

The hospital began the month by sponsoring two key community events:

• The Breast Cancer Foundation's annual 5K in Lakeland, Florida - bringing together survivors, caregivers and community members to support early detection and research.
• The Pink Ribbon Gala, benefiting the Breast Cancer Foundation of Central Florida, which raises funds to support patients and programs throughout the region.

These events reflect the hospital's ongoing commitment to care beyond its walls, supporting the organizations and initiatives that bring awareness and hope to those affected by breast cancer.

Pink Ribbon Messages & Visual Tribute

Throughout October, visitors are invited to stop by the imaging department at HCA Florida Brandon Hospital to sign or write a message on a pink ribbon honoring breast cancer survivors, fighters or loved ones lost.

These ribbons will be tied to the trees in front of the Women's Center, creating a moving visual display of community support, strength, and solidarity.

Special Event: "Breast Friends Brunch"

HCA Florida Brandon Hospital will host a special mammogram event - the 'Breast Friends Brunch' on Saturday, October 25, from 8:00am to 2:00pm at the hospital.

During this event, women can enjoy a complimentary brunch while completing their screening mammogram in a comfortable and encouraging environment.

Appointments and prescriptions are required. Register to reserve a space.

Support Beyond Screening

The hospital also hosts a monthly Women's Cancer Support Group, offering emotional support, education and encouragement to patients, survivors and caregivers. The next meeting will take place on Monday, October 28, at HCA Florida Brandon Hospital.

This ongoing group reflects the hospital's mission to provide comprehensive care - addressing not only physical needs but also emotional well-being and community connection.

Honoring Survivors & Raising Awareness

Every Wednesday in October, colleagues at HCA Florida Brandon Hospital are encouraged to wear pink to demonstrate unity and raise awareness about the importance of early detection and ongoing research.

Why Awareness Matters

According to the American Cancer Society, about 1 in 8 women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. The five-year survival rate for breast cancer that is detected early is approximately 99%, compared to about 30% when diagnosed at later stages.

Early detection saves lives. Regular screening mammograms and awareness initiatives continue to be the most effective tools in improving outcomes and reducing mortality rates.
