Center 50+ Teen Summer Internship Strengthens Neighborhood Connections in Salem

This summer, four high school students from Sprague, West Salem, McNary and Silvias River Charter schools completed Center 50+'s Teen Summer Internship program, which focuses on bringing people together by using neighborhood resources, creating opportunities for social activities and helping everyone feel like they belong. The program culminated in each intern hosting a unique community-building event bringing together neighbors of all ages.

"Center 50+ is proud of the interns' accomplishments and grateful to the participating schools, neighbors and community partners," said Center 50+ Manager Marilyn Daily-Blair. "Their efforts show that intergenerational connection is not only possible, but also essential for building strong, livable communities."

Creative Community Events

Each intern designed an event tailored to their neighborhood, including:

• A Lemonade and Conversation Stand: A casual spot for neighbors to meet and talk
• A Potluck Picnic: A gathering to share food and stories
• A Board Game Social: An event filled with laughter and connection through games
• A Recipe Swap: A chance to exchange favorite recipes and their stories

Each event connected neighbors, sparking new relationships and strengthening existing ones. These outcomes align with the program's focus on social participation and low-barrier community engagement.

By encouraging teens and older adults to engage in shared activities, the Teen Summer Internship program reduces social isolation, promotes understanding and strengthens community bonds. It also reflects Center 50+'s commitment to youth leadership, helping teens develop valuable skills while creating opportunities for older adults to feel included and valued.
