NYTA Launches “175 Years of Advertising” Celebrating Moments Shaping Our World

Today, New York Times Advertising (NYTA) launched "175 Years of Advertising," a marketing campaign exploring how advertising reflects the moments that shape our world.

For more than 175 years, brands have turned to The New York Times to make a statement, reach influential audiences and participate in the conversations shaping culture. The campaign brings that history to life through a nine-page print spread featuring seven advertisements from The Times's archive, spanning from 1851 to 2026.

"Reviewing our expansive archive revealed a clear pattern: advertising often foreshadows significant cultural moments, from scaling the adoption of personal automobiles to the emergence of online banking," said Tusar Barik, SVP of Marketing at New York Times Advertising. "This insight shaped our campaign, which is grounded in The Times's history and the evolution of advertising, while also acknowledging our long-standing client relationships and advertising's role in supporting independent journalism."

The print spread, which can be viewed in today's national edition of The New York Times, moves chronologically, with each selected ad highlighting a distinct moment in time. Featured advertisers include:

  • Tiffany & Co (1851): Three months after The New York Times published its first issue in 1851, Tiffany & Co. saw an opportunity to connect with Times readers during the holiday season. The company advertised its jewelry, watches, clocks and more as ideal holiday gifts for discerning shoppers.
  • Ford Motor Company (1909): In 1909, as the auto industry shifted from luxury to mass production, Ford Motor Company touted the superiority of its Model T car through an advertisement highlighting the vehicle's victory in a cross-country race from New York to Seattle.
  • IBM (1966): In 1966, IBM used the pages of The New York Times to highlight its role in the NASA space program and its efforts to help put a man on the moon.

Other brands featured in the print spread include Heinz, E*TRADE, L'Oréal Groupe and Delta Airlines. Each ad is accompanied by a short summary placing it within its broader cultural context.

"Warmest congratulations to The New York Times on celebrating 175 remarkable years," said Andrea Davey, Global Chief Marketing Officer at Tiffany & Co. "Born and rooted in New York City, our shared heritage runs deep. We are honored to celebrate this milestone together and to continue a partnership built on a relentless commitment to craft, culture, and iconic storytelling."

The print spread concludes with a message from Joy Robins, global chief advertising officer at The New York Times, about advertising's role in supporting independent journalism.

Beyond print, "175 Years of Advertising" is being amplified by an entire digital ecosystem, consisting of custom digital ad units, audio spots from Joy Robins and adedicated digital pagefeaturing advertising milestones from across The Times's history. Media will run through September 30, 2026.
