Merrell and Jessen discuss building university’s AI platform

Phil Merrell and Shad Jessen from the Office of Information Technology recently partnered with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to share Boise State's story of building boisestate.ai.

The AWS article showcases the impact of this work, from rapid delivery to significant cost savings, and how staff expertise played a key role in making campus-wide AI access possible.

The project is an example of how staff innovation, strong technical design and strategic partnerships can deliver real value for the university.

Highlights from the article include:

• Reduced per-user AI costs by more than 80%
• Avoided an estimated $7 million per year in potential commercial AI licensing costs
• Designed and launched the platform in just six months with a small internal team
• Created a secure, FERPA-aware environment for campus-wide AI use
• Built a flexible architecture that allows the university to evaluate and switch AI models as needs evolve
