WASHINGTON, DC - Following President Trump's decision to start a war with Iran, U.S. Senator Gary Peters (MI) pressed a top Defense Department official for details on the United States' strategy. During a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing with Undersecretary of Defense for Policy Elbridge Colby, Peters underscored the need for clarity on the Trump Administration's objectives and exit strategy for the war.
"The administration must immediately seek congressional approval to make clear to not just the Congress, but more importantly to the American people, that there's an actual end goal and there's an actual strategy to ensure that what he is doing there actually protects our homeland security as opposed to endangering it," Peters said during the hearing.

During his remarks, Peters underscored his long-held belief that Iran is a bad actor and should never produce a nuclear weapon. At the same time, he reiterated that the President's decision to get involved in this war does not reflect the wants or needs of Michiganders and the American people.
"What I am hearing from my constituents is that they do not want to send their sons and daughters to war. That is not something the American people want," said Peters. "In fact, what I hear from them is they want to see costs come down in America. They're paying too much. Costs continue to go up. Trump policies have raised prices and now we may see spikes in energy prices. They don't want a war."
