Alix Clare named winner of 2025 Women in Glass Award

Alexis "Alix" Clare, emeritus professor of glass science at Alfred University, was named recipient of the 2025 Women in Glass Award. She was presented the award Monday evening during the first day of the 86th Glass Problems Conference in Toledo, OH.

The Glass Problems Conference, being held Oct. 6-9 at the City Glass Center in Toledo, is sponsored by the Glass Manufacturing Industry Council (GMIC).

The Women in Glass Award recognizes women who have demonstrated excellence in leading, motivating, and developing others in the glass industry. The winner exemplifies leadership in science, technology, engineering, production, and manufacturing, and mentors and supports the next generation of talent in the glass industry. It honors and recognizes women whose achievements and success stories have helped move the needle within the glass industry through sustainability, workforce development, innovation, and diversity.

Criteria for the award include:

  • Leadership: demonstrated excellent leadership skills within their company.
  • Impact: visible and tangible impact on fellow employees, whether subordinate or others through actions or activities.
  • Development of others: mentoring within or outside of their company, provided support for next generation of women in the glass industry actively engaging in career coaching.
  • Presence: possesses visibility within their organization or field, demonstrates high integrity in actions and words and portrays an image of strength and confidence that inspires.
  • Diversity, inclusion, equity: actively fosters a diverse and inclusive environment in all they do.

The Women in Glass Award is sponsored by the Air Products Foundation.

Clare retired from Alfred University earlier this year after a 36-year teaching career at Alfred. She is a Fellow of both the Society of Glass Technology UK and the American Ceramic Society.
