Senator Coons statement on Anthropic’s launch of Project Glasswing

WILMINGTON, Del. - U.S. Senator Chris Coons (D-Del.) released the following statement in response to Anthropic's launch of Project Glasswing - a coalition of America's leading technology companies working together to deploy cutting-edge AI models to find and fix dangerous security flaws in the software that underpins our health care system, our financial services, and our basic digital infrastructure before our adversaries can exploit them:

"In recent years, we have seen a dramatic increase in cyberattacks from U.S. adversaries - a trend that has only accelerated following President Trump's war of choice with Iran. China, Russia, North Korea, and now increasingly Iran, are targeting our basic digital infrastructure, our financial services, and health care systems - and they're using AI to do it. It highlights what I've seen as the ranking Democrat for defense appropriations: any country that gains an edge in the AI race will have a significant strategic advantage militarily and economically. Project Glasswing is a landmark moment in that race. I'm glad to see these companies have come together in good faith to use this advanced technology to keep Americans safe.

"Now, Congress needs to step up and do our job: creating clear rules that encourage and support innovation and growth, while ensuring AI can't be used to threaten Americans. We can't let China or other actors who may wish our nation harm access this powerful American technology. We also must keep supporting American innovation to strengthen our cyber defenses so we can remain a step ahead of those bombarding our cyber infrastructure hoping to find a weakness. Finally, we need to ensure our defense enterprise - including DOD and the intelligence community - are working closely with industry to adopt these technologies with the necessary guardrails, rather than standing on the sidelines or stifling innovation. That's the kind of security Americans deserve."
