From a vision to save "a little land" to 510 acres of restored habitat, Mequon Nature Preserve is a leader in land restoration, nature-based research, and education located in the heart of the Milwaukee River Watershed. The Preserve's land and staff have inspired thousands of people over 26 years as they restore habitats and provide opportunities that inspire exploration and stewardship.
In partnership with Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District's (MMSD) Reforestation & Wetland Restoration program, over 43,000 trees were planted, and approximately 9 acres of wetlands were restored, transforming farm fields back to native habitat where flora and fauna can thrive and where countless visitors can explore now and into the future. Collectively, these nature-based solutions to flood management will intercept or store over 4 million gallons of stormwater runoff.
MMSD honors the Mequon Nature Preserve with its second Green Luminary Award for its vision and dedication over many years to make this transformational project come to life. Nine years ago, Mequon Nature Preserve won its first Green Luminary® Award by adding rain barrels, cisterns, and a green roof to its property.
