Foreign Ministry Demands Investigation into Adelanto Processing Center in California Following Death of Mexican National in ICE Custody

The Foreign Ministry reports that the Mexican Consulate in San Bernardino was notified by immigration authorities at the Adelanto ICE Processing Center that a Mexican national died while in custody on the night of March 25. According to preliminary information from the center, he was transferred to a hospital in Victorville, California, where he died; the official cause of death has not yet been determined.

The consulate activated the appropriate protocol and contacted the family to provide the necessary assistance and consular support. It is in communication with the authorities to ascertain the cause of death, obtain the full medical records, and establish the circumstances leading up to the death, with the aim of fully clarifying the facts.

The Foreign Ministry again calls on the authorities responsible to put an end to these deplorable cases and demands an immediate review of the Adelanto ICE Processing Center, given the serious failures and clear deficiencies in the medical care provided to those in its custody.

The Mexican Government will exhaust every legal and diplomatic avenue to bring attention to this situation and to see this case addressed, and reaffirms its commitment to protecting the rights and dignity of Mexican nationals abroad.
