Transylvania welcomes new chief of public safety

Transylvania University has appointed Steven Herold as its new chief of public safety. Herold, who began Monday, was selected after a comprehensive search and brings a wealth of experience and deep commitment to fostering a safe and inclusive campus environment.

Herold joins Transylvania from the Kentucky Department of Criminal Justice Training in Richmond, where he served as a section supervisor. He was responsible for overseeing curriculum development and successfully transitioning training platforms to an online format. His extensive qualifications include a master's degree in criminal justice administration, an executive certificate in criminal justice, and various certifications, notably in de-escalation training.

Prior to his tenure at DCJT, Herold dedicated 24 years to the Racine Police Department and honorably served 32 years in the U.S. Army Reserve.

"Chief Herold's vast experience and commitment to a collaborative safety approach will be invaluable in maintaining our secure and welcoming campus environment," said Transylvania President Brien Lewis.

During the interview process, Herold demonstrated a profound understanding of university safety, emphasizing the importance of community engagement, transparency and proactive safety measures. He expressed his enthusiasm for his new role, saying, "I'm honored to join the Transylvania University community and excited to contribute to a campus environment that values safety, inclusion and collaboration."

Chief Herold's leadership is expected to significantly enhance the Department of Public Safety and reinforce the university's commitment to the well-being of its students, faculty and staff.
