The Transportation Community Awareness and Emergency Response (TRANSCAER®) initiative proudly marks its 40th anniversary in 2025. Established in 1985 by the Chemistry Industry Association of Canada (CIAC), TRANSCAER has dedicated four decades to ensuring the safe transportation of chemicals and hazardous materials across Canada by fostering strong partnerships with communities, emergency responders, and industry leaders.
Reflecting on this milestone, the President and CEO of CIAC, Greg Moffatt, stated, "For 40 years, TRANSCAER has set the standard in proactive safety education and emergency response. Our collaborative approach has helped build safer communities, ensuring that everyone understands the measures in place to protect them. We look forward to continuing this vital work for many years to come."
Through training programs, community outreach, and emergency planning assistance, TRANSCAER continues to uphold its mission of promoting public safety and preparedness. Its extensive network engages municipalities and first responders to build robust emergency response capabilities, reflecting a commitment to transparency and collaboration. The initiative's efforts further supported by key partners such as the Railway Association of Canada, contributing to nationwide outreach events and specialized training programs.
This year will also see the launch of the new TRANSCAER Safety Train, a railway tank car that has been converted into a classroom on wheels for the purpose of training emergency responders. Every spring, the Safety Train will begin its journey across Canada, making stops in communities where dangerous goods travel - from coast to coast.
By traveling to communities, TRANSCAER has established partnerships between manufacturers, distributors, carriers, emergency responders, government agencies, and residents - an important first step in preparing for any transportation emergency.
The anniversary will be marked by sharing stories of member and partner success and community engagement on the TRANSCAER LinkedIn and X accounts, so be sure to follow.
