MYSTIC, CT - Connecticut Insurance Department (CID) Commissioner Josh Hershman joined leaders from government, nonprofit organizations, academia, and the private sector earlier this week to discuss strategies for strengthening community resilience in the face of increasingly frequent and severe weather events, including flooding and other climate-related risks.

The event, Travelers Across America organized by Travelers and the National Trust for Historic Preservation, featured discussions and a collaborative workshop focused on advancing community resilience strategies and identifying practical solutions to help communities better prepare for, withstand, and recover from emerging challenges.

"Building resilience requires collaboration across sectors," said Commissioner Hershman. "Communities are facing increasingly complex risks, and no single sector can address them alone. Events like this demonstrate the important role insurers can play in bringing stakeholders together to share expertise, identify solutions, and strengthen resilience. We need more of these partnerships to help communities better prepare for and adapt to future challenges."

This work aligns with the CID's ongoing efforts to strengthen resilience and support long-term preparedness across the state. Through the Severe Weather Mitigation and Resiliency Advisory Council, the Department developed recommendations to help protect homes, businesses, and communities from future losses.

The CID also offers access to the state's free Climate Risk Mapping Tool, which provides Connecticut residents with property-level information on risks such as flooding, wind, wildfire, and extreme heat, helping them better understand potential hazards and plan ahead.

More information about the Severe Weather Mitigation and Resiliency Advisory Council and the Climate Risk Mapping Tool is available on the Connecticut Insurance Department website.
