No. 26-11

JUNEAU, Alaska - May's statewide job count was even with the previous May, as government job losses equaled private-sector gains.

The transportation, warehousing and utilities sector added 1,600 jobs, oil and gas added 1,000 and leisure and hospitality added 400.

Industries with fewer jobs included construction (-600), professional and business services (-300) and information, wholesale, and retail (each down by 100).

Alaska had 1,500 fewer federal government jobs in May than it did a year earlier, a nearly 10 percent reduction. State government employment was down by 700. Local government, which includes public schools, lost 200 jobs.

Alaska's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 4.6 percent in May, and the U.S rate was 4.3 percent. Both were unchanged from April.
