Loretto, PA - Saint Francis University proudly announces MLK and Stokes Legacy Week 2025, a weeklong celebration honoring the remarkable legacies of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Maurice Stokes. From January 20-24, 2025, the campus will host events that reflect the values of justice, equality, and compassion, exemplified by Dr. King's vision and Stokes' inspiring journey.
Maurice Stokes, a Saint Francis icon, led the university's men's basketball program to a fourth-place finish at the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) in 1955, breaking barriers in the NBA. After a tragic injury left him paralyzed in 1958, Stokes' story of resilience and the friendship of teammate Jack Twyman inspired generations.
This legacy is at the heart of a new children's book, Stokes: The Brief Career of the NBA's First Black Superstar, written by Ty Chapman and John Coy and illustrated by Lonnie Olliverre. During Legacy Week, the authors will be on campus for readings, discussions, and a book signing, sharing Stokes' story of perseverance, friendship, and the power of community with audiences of all ages.
Highlighting the week is keynote speaker Chuck Cooper III, son of Chuck Cooper, the first African-American drafted into the NBA and a mentor to Maurice Stokes. Mr. Cooper will reflect on the legacies of his father and Stokes, focusing on their role in breaking racial barriers and championing dignity, harmony, and excellence on and off the court. His address will offer insights into the impact of these trailblazers on sports and society.
Legacy Week will feature keynote addresses, readings, lectures, and basketball games, offering reflection, learning, and celebration opportunities. Saint Francis University invites the community to participate in this inspiring tribute to three men (Stokes, Twyman, and Cooper) whose values and stories continue to unite and inspire.
