Rep. Chu Votes No on FY2027 NDAA

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, Rep. Judy Chu (CA-28) voted against H.R. 8800, the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2027, which passed the House by a vote of 216-212. Rep. Chu released the following statement:

"This year's NDAA gives President Trump a $1.15 trillion blank check to continue his illegal, destabilizing, and deeply unpopular war in Iran, while once again asking working families to pay the price. That war has already claimed seventeen American lives, injured nearly 500 more, and diverted hundreds of billions of taxpayer dollars away from the urgent needs facing families here at home.

At a time when Americans are struggling to afford groceries, gas, housing, child care, and health care, House Republicans have chosen to pour another $250 billion into a Pentagon that has failed six consecutive audits instead of investing in the people they were elected to serve. That $250 billion alone could fund SNAP benefits for 110 million people or provide Medicaid coverage for 29 million people.

Further, Republicans inserted the SAVE America Act into the NDAA, advancing a voter suppression bill that would make it significantly harder for eligible Americans to register to vote. By requiring documents like passports or birth certificates, the legislation would create needless bureaucratic hurdles that threaten to lock millions of eligible voters out of our democracy-particularly married women, working families, young people, people of color, and low-income Americans.

For these reasons, I voted no."
