Altria (MO) shares climbed 5.2% on Thursday, October 29, 2026, while the S&P 500 fell 0.3%. The stock gained on the day the company reported third-quarter results and raised its full-year earnings forecast. So what exactly did Altria report?

Altria Beat Estimates And Raised Full-Year Guidance

Altria surpassed analyst estimates for both revenue and profit. The company posted adjusted earnings of $1.52 per share on $5.44 billion in revenue, topping forecasts of $1.51 and $5.31 billion. News reports linked the stock's rise to those better-than-expected results and the higher outlook.

Management now expects adjusted diluted earnings of $5.66 to $5.74 per share for 2026. This target represents growth of 4.5% to 6% over 2025, compared with the 2.5% to 5% range provided at the start of the year. Executives made this comparison during the earnings call, noting that strong performance through the first nine months gave the company confidence to narrow and raise the range. In July, the company had already lifted its forecast to $5.61 to $5.72 per share. In addition, the board authorized a $1 billion expansion of the company's share repurchase program.

The latest quarter highlights how Altria generates higher profits despite selling fewer cigarettes. Even as reported domestic cigarette volumes fell 2.9%, adjusted earnings per share rose 4.8% from a year earlier. Strong pricing lifted profits in the smokeable products business, according to news reports. Meanwhile, shipments of on!, Altria's nicotine pouch brand, grew 13.3% to 47.8 million cans.

Leaning on a narrow product line carries its own risk when unit sales fall. Tesla drew 98% of last quarter's deliveries from just two models, the Model 3 and Model Y, after deliveries fell two years running. Its deliveries are up 8.8% this year through September, but nearly all still come from those two cars. Read Trefis Big Story: How Tesla Blundered.

Did Peer Stocks Rise With Altria?

Some peers advanced alongside Altria during the session, with Philip Morris International rising 2.9% and Turning Point Brands climbing 2.5%. Constellation Brands, Molson Coors Beverage and Canopy Growth, the remaining companies on Altria's Trefis peer list, each moved less than 1% in either direction. The consumer staples sector fund, XLP, rose 1.5% on a day the S&P 500 fell. While Altria tracked the upward direction of its sector, Philip Morris and Turning Point Brands that day, it moved further than any of them.

Where Does Altria Stock Stand Now?

Single-day rallies of this magnitude are rare for Altria. Over the prior 365 days, the stock gained this much or more in just one session, climbing 6.5% on April 30, 2026. Its most recent price swing of at least this size in either direction was a 9.3% drop on July 30, 2026.

The stock closed Thursday at $76.75, marking its highest close of the past year and sitting well above the low close of $54.72 on January 7, 2026. Including dividends, Altria returned 29.5% over the past 12 months, compared with 13.3% for the S&P 500. Much of that gain materialized recently: the stock returned 14.0% from September 30 to October 29, against about 1% for the S&P 500.

Altria is expected to report its fourth-quarter results in early 2027. When those figures arrive, adjusted earnings per share for the full year 2026, measured against the raised forecast, will be the number to watch.

Does This Mean You Should Act On MO?

Our purpose is to inform you with unique data so you make the right investment decisions. That said, betting on a single stock is always risky, no matter which direction you choose.

There is a smarter approach. Since its inception, the Trefis High Quality (HQ) Portfolio has returned 105%, beating the benchmark that combines the three major indices - the S&P 500, S&P Mid-cap, and Russell 2000. And it did so without taking the concentrated risk that comes with do-it-yourself stock picking. If that is how you want to invest, the HQ Portfolio is the place to start.
