While Republicans continue barreling towards a government shutdown on the orders of President Donald Trump, congressional Democrats are working to avert a shutdown and protect health care for millions of Americans. Yesterday, Senate and House Democratic leaders Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries demanded a meeting with Trump to negotiate a bipartisan agreement. Unfortunately, Trump and his lackeys in Congress have refused to negotiate with Democrats and would rather shut down the government than address the worsening health care crisis they created.
Reminder: Just months after giving billionaires a tax break by raising costs on working families, gutting Medicaid, and kicking millions off their health insurance, Trump and Republicans are doubling down by refusing to negotiate a bipartisan funding deal that would deliver for the American people and prevent millions more from losing insurance, health care costs from skyrocketing, and hospitals from closing.
In response, DNC Chair Ken Martin released the following statement:
"Congressional Democrats are fighting to lower costs, protect health care access, and prevent a health care crisis caused by reckless Republican policies. If Donald Trump ignores their latest offer and refuses to come to the negotiating table, voters will hold him and Republicans up and down the ballot accountable for continuing to put billionaire tax breaks over the needs of everyday Americans just trying to get by."
If Trump refuses to meet with Democrats, he and the Republican Party will be held accountable by the American people for the senseless, avoidable health care crisis they're causing. People are already suffering thanks to Republicans, but it's not too late to prevent further damage.
