Surrounded by deep blue waters and rich marine life, the island of Moala could soon become a new destination for game-fishing enthusiasts from around the world.
Much like the Camakau Canoe Regatta has placed Fulaga on the tourism map, Moala's waters hold the potential to attract visitors seeking a unique, experience-based adventure.
This vision is one the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism, Hon. Bill Gavoka, is keen to turn into reality.
During his visit to five islands in Lau Province this week, DPM Gavoka delivered a clear and consistent message: Lau's tourism future will be different - and proudly its own.
"We want to bring visitors from around the world to Lau through our own style of tourism," he said.
"Tourism in Fiji has long been centred in the western part of Viti Levu - places like Denarau, the Yasawas and the Coral Coast. Lau will be a different cluster, offering something new."
As part of the visit, DPM Gavoka and United Nations Resident Coordinator, Dirk Wagener, travelled to Moala, Fulaga, Lakeba, Cicia and Vanua Balavu to assess tourism potential and infrastructure needs.
A key focus was the condition of airstrips, which are critical for improving access and supporting future tourism growth.
"That is why we are here - to look at airstrips and the upgrades needed to make these islands more accessible," DPM Gavoka said.
The visits form part of early discussions towards a master tourism plan for the Lau Group, including the Bay of Islands near Fulaga. While Fulaga currently has no airstrip, alternative options are being considered, including improved sea access for cruise liners and super yachts.
Mata ni Tikina for Moala, Daku Niulevu, welcomed the Government's visit and inclusion of Moala in the wider tourism vision.
"Our people are thankful that Moala is being considered," he said.
"This gives us hope that our island's resources and skills can support new opportunities for our young people."
For Moala, game fishing could become more than a pastime - it could be the hook that draws the world to Lau.
