Washington, DC - U.S. Representative Derek Tran (CA-45) released a statement following his vote on H.R. 1958, the Deporting Fraudsters Act of 2026:
"Growing up, my family relied on food stamps, Medicaid, and Section 8 housing to get by. As the child of Vietnamese refugees, these programs were lifelines that allowed my family to achieve the American dream. For these social safety net programs to remain available for the families who truly need them, we must protect their integrity. Cheating the government and stealing public benefits threatens the stability of the entire system for every hardworking family who relies on it. That's why I voted for the Fraudsters Act. We are a nation of laws, and, unlike the communist Vietnam that my family fled, you can get ahead in America if you work hard and play by the rules. As a lawyer, I know how sacred the rule of law is - and firmly believe that those who break it deserve to be held accountable. By holding those who exploit our resources accountable, we are protecting the American Dream for future generations."
The Deporting Fraudsters Act of 2026 makes public benefits fraud grounds for barring a noncitizen from admission into the United States, or for deporting noncitizens already living in the country.
