SALT LAKE CITY - The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is introducing the "Families on the Fly" initiative to streamline the airport security screening process for families, ensuring a smoother and more accommodating experience during the busy summer travel season and beyond.
Dedicated family lanes at Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) are now available on lane 14 or 15 of the main checkpoint. These lanes are designed to address the unique challenges parents face when traveling with young children, such as handheld electronic games, managing strollers, and diaper bags.
"Traveling with children can be daunting, and we want to ease that burden," said TSA Federal Security Director for Utah Matt Davis. "The 'Families on the Fly' campaign offers dedicated security lanes for families with children aged 12 and under, creating a more efficient and family-friendly screening process. Our goal is to make air travel secure, smart, and supportive for families."
The "Families on the Fly" dedicated lanes are also available at several other major airports, including Orlando, Tampa and Jacksonville International; Charlotte-Douglas International; John Wayne Airport in Orange County, California; Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu; Charleston International Airport in South Carolina; Will Rogers International Airport in Oklahoma City, Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and T.F. Green International Airport in Providence, Rhode Island. TSA plans to expand these family lanes to additional airports nationwide.
As part of the initiative, TSA will soon offer discounted TSA PreCheck® fees for families along with dedicated TSA PreCheck lanes for military service members and their families.
This initiative is part of TSA's broader efforts to enhance hospitality across its 435 airports. Earlier this summer, TSA introduced the "Serve with Honor, Travel with Ease" campaign, which provides expedited TSA PreCheck access for military and uniformed service members and their families at select airports near military installations. This includes dedicated screening lanes or front-of-line privileges to reduce wait times.
TSA reminds travelers at SLC that military personnel and civilian Department of Defense (DOD) staff can access TSA PreCheck at no cost by using their DOD ID number as their Known Traveler Number when booking travel. Children 12 and under may accompany eligible service members or DOD staff through TSA PreCheck lanes without restriction, while minors aged 13-17 must be on the same reservation as a TSA PreCheck-eligible parent or guardian to benefit from expedited screening.
TSA has expanded its services at SLC by adding a TSA PreCheck lane to the Level 1 screening checkpoint. This enhancement means TSA PreCheck lanes are now available at both airport checkpoints, offering eligible passengers a more convenient and efficient screening experience.
