Direct Relief Midwife Kits Support Safe Births Across Chad
Chad's Ministry of Public Health and Prevention received a shipment of midwife kits from Direct Relief at an official handover ceremony on June 30, 2026.
The shipment included 70 full midwife kits and 41 midwife replenishment kits - 23 pallets total. The kits are expected to support more than 7,200 births across health facilities throughout Chad, improving conditions for pregnant women and newborns where maternal and neonatal mortality remains a significant public health challenge.
Dr. Naïma Haroun Saleh, Deputy Director General of Pharmacy, Drugs and Laboratories, noted that Direct Relief has provided medicines, medical devices, health equipment, and essential inputs to Chad since 2024.
Minister of Public Health and Prevention Dr. Abdelmadjid Abderahim called the kits a major contribution to Chad's efforts to reduce maternal and child mortality and noted the importance of strategic partnerships in strengthening the country's health system.
Supporting Children's Dental Care at Santa Barbara Neighborhood Clinics
On June 24, 2026, Direct Relief hosted a community kitting event at Casa Dorinda, a retirement community in Montecito, California - not far from where Direct Relief was founded in the hills above Santa Barbara.
Casa Dorinda residents attended the event, which included a presentation on Direct Relief's history and work before participants assembled 300 pediatric dental kits with supplies including toothbrushes, toothpaste, and other care items for children. Direct Relief staff subsequently delivered 100 of the kits to the Santa Barbara Neighborhood Clinics, or SBNC, Milpas dental location, which provides dental care to underserved community members including children.
Dr. Kumar, a dentist at SBNC, noted the kits' value for patients and families:
"These kits include high quality products that always bring a smile to our patients and their parents' faces. They also allow us to provide products to families that might otherwise not purchase them, like a new toothbrush, and floss picks. We use them to demonstrate oral hygiene instructions before children leave their appointments, and also for our school outreach events."
