CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Today, U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), a leader on the Senate Appropriations Committee, joined city leaders in Charleston, W.Va. to announce a Congressionally Directed Spending (CDS) allocation she helped secure to support a planned sports complex.
Through the Fiscal Year (FY) 2026 Appropriations process, Senator Capito helped secure a $7,000,000 CDS allocation to build the Capital Sports Center, the largest sports complex in the state of West Virginia. This new sports tourism facility will draw regional and national-level tournaments and related sports tourism to the Greater Charleston area.
"Today, I was proud to announce that the City of Charleston will soon receive a $7 million Congressionally Directed Spending award that I helped secure in Fiscal Year 2026 to build the Capital Sports Center," Senator Capito said. "This investment is about job creation, supporting local businesses, and positioning Charleston as a premier destination for regional and national tournaments. As a leader on the Senate Appropriations Committee, I will continue working to deliver results for West Virginia and ensure our communities have the resources they need to grow and thrive."
"The Capital Sports Center represents a long-term investment in our region's future," Mayor Amy Shuler Goodwin said. "We are grateful to Senator Capito and Senator Justice for securing this funding and for their continued attention and commitment to the priorities that will drive long-term regional growth. This allocation strengthens our ability to continue moving this project forward-positioning Charleston and Kanawha County to expand sports tourism, support local businesses, and create long-term economic opportunity."
"This allocation reflects what can be accomplished through strong partnerships," Kanawha County Commission President Ben Salango said. "By working together across all levels of government, we are positioning our region for long-term growth and expanded opportunity."
