Beware of Fraudulent Email Scams That Appear to Come from the City of Malibu

The City of Malibu has intercepted multiple email scam attempts that appear to come from the City. These scams often target older adults and fire survivors. The City is tracking these incidents and sharing information with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

How to Identify a Scam Email

Be cautious of phishing emails that use fake email addresses and impersonate City staff members.

  • Official City email addresses always end with @malibucity.org.
  • Official City invoices are never sent from City commissions or committees.
  • Watch for red flags such as poor grammar, suspicious links, urgent requests, or unexpected attachments.
  • Never share personal or financial information or click on suspicious links.
  • If in doubt, don't reply or click on links or attachments.

Report Suspicious Emails

Forward suspicious emails to the City's Public Safety Department at [email protected] so the City can review and track them, and coordinate with the LA County Sheriff's Department, which also tracks current fraud schemes. You may also report phishing attempts to the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center website at ic3.gov.

Stay alert and help protect yourself and others from fraud.
