Balcony Bliss: Creating a Summer Oasis Right Outside Your Door

During the summer, our apartment balcony becomes my outdoor oasis, a true summer extension of our home! Whether you want to sip iced coffee in the morning sun, host a mini happy hour, or just relax with a good book under string lights, there are so many renter-friendly ways to customize your space.

This year, I focused on transforming our basic balcony into my summer sanctuary, and you can do it, too!

Step 1: Define Your Balcony or Patio Hangout Vibe

Before placing that online order or perusing your local store, think about how you want to use your balcony. Is it:

- A chill reading nook?

- A space for outdoor dining or drinks?

- A tiny garden retreat?

- Your own personal sun lounge?

Deciding on a theme or function will guide your layout and decor choices as you continue on this journey!

Step 2: Start with the Flooring

Most balconies have plain concrete, which provides a great, sturdy base. Though flooring upgrades are not an absolute must, there are plenty of renter-friendly customizations you can make:

- Outdoor Rugs: Weather-resistant rugs add comfort and color with ease.

- Deck Tiles: Interlocking wood or faux-grass tiles are renter-friendly and elevate your balcony fast!

Step 3: Choose Compact, Comfy Furniture

Bust out that tape measure and calculate the size of your space before ordering furniture! Balconies come in all shapes and sizes, so consider that when picking furnishings. Some great options include:

- Patio Sets: Typically designed with balcony sizes in mind, these are a great all-in-one option for furnishing your balcony.

- Hammock Chair or Hanging Swing: For the ultimate lounge spot, incorporate a hammock or egg chair into your space. To keep up the renter-friendly vibes, make sure you purchase a self-supporting stand too!

Step 4: Create Some Shade & Privacy

Making your space feel cozy and protected from the sun is as easy as a few customizations!

- Outdoor Curtains: Add a breezy, resort feel and block harsh light with outdoor curtains. I suggest using a tension rod to make this suggestion ultra renter-friendly!

- Bamboo Screens: Offering privacy and adding to your décor, bamboo screens are an excellent option!

Step 5: Light It Up

For me, I really believe that lighting can transform your space and mood!

- String Lights: Drape them along the railing or overhead for a soft glow.

- Solar-Powered Lamps or Lanterns: Add ambiance while promoting sustainability without needing an outlet!

- LED Candles or Fairy Lights in Jars: Cute, safe, and renter-friendly; what a triple threat!

Step 6: Add Plants for That Summer Energy

Whether you go full jungle or just add a touch of green, these options customize your space and make use of your green thumb:

- Potted Herbs: Practical and engage more than one of your senses with their aroma.

- Trailing Vines or Hanging Baskets: Save floor space and add dimension, but make sure you choose command strip products to hang them!

- Mini Garden Box: The opportunities are endless! Put your green thumb to the test by growing your very own patch of strawberries, tomatoes, or lettuce.

Step 7: Bring in Personality

Most importantly: make your balcony feel like YOU!

- Throw Pillows & Blankets: Use outdoor pillows and blankets to soften your balcony décor or store them inside between uses.

- Decorative Accents: Lanterns, trays, wind chimes, or art meant for outdoor spaces show your personality off!

- Bluetooth Speaker: Create a summer playlist for your personal outdoor lounge to keep rockin' all summer long!

Final Finishes

Customizing your balcony for summer doesn't require a big budget or a ton of square footage. With a little creativity and patience, your apartment balcony can become your personal paradise in no time! Feeling inspired to bring the beauty of your new balcony indoors?
