Luján Introduces Bill to Ban DOJ Immunity for Presidents

Luján Legislation to Protect DOJ Independence Comes as Trump's Personal Defense Attorney Todd Blanche is Considered to be Next Attorney General

Washington, D.C. - Today, U.S. Senator Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.) introduced the No Trump Immunity Act, legislation to prohibit the Department of Justice (DOJ) from granting immunity to the President, the Vice President, their immediate family members, trusts, related companies, or affiliates.

The introduction of the No Trump Immunity Act comes as the Senate Judiciary Committee considers Todd Blanche's nomination to be Attorney General of the United States. In May, Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche granted President Trump and his family extraordinary protection from Internal Revenue Service (IRS) investigations as part of an immunity deal orchestrated by the DOJ to end President Trump's lawsuit against his own administration.

"Americans deserve to know that no one is above the law, especially the President of the United States," said Senator Luján. "At a time when the Senate is considering a nominee who would lead the DOJ, Congress must make clear that DOJ exists to enforce the law - not to protect powerful politicians or their inner circle. This legislation restores confidence that DOJ immunity cannot be abused to protect corruption, self-dealing, or serious criminal misconduct."

Specifically, the No Trump Immunity Act would prohibit the DOJ from granting immunity to the President, the Vice President, their family members, trusts, related companies, or affiliates. In addition, the legislation also prohibits grants of immunity for:

• Claims related to the Attorney General's May 19, 2026, order;
• Money laundering for Iran, North Korea, Hamas, or Mexican drug cartels;
• Insider trading related to war with Iran;
• Abusing or facilitating sexual abuse; and
• Illegally steering taxpayer dollars to friends, family members, or business partners.

The legislation is supported by Common Cause and the Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington.
